BLOAT - A life threatening condition

Medically known as Gastric-Dilatation Volvulus, or Torsion of the stomach.

1. The stomach becomes tense, filled with air and stretched, like a balloon = DILATATION

2. It is then likely that the distended stomach twists on itself, resulting in complete obstruction of outflow of the stomach contents. The dog may try to vomit, but will not be able to empty its stomach. May only be able to bring up some frothy fluid.

3. The swelling impinges on the blood flow to other organs, and the dog quickly collapses due to loss of blood and toxic shock.

CAUSES
There are many theories as to what causes bloat.
The one known factor is that DEEP CHESTED DOGS, such as Bullmastiffs and Great Danes are most prone.
Other factors probably include:
Swallowing a lot of air as the dog eats too quickly; Exercising just before or after eating a meal; Stress; Possibly due to  eating a dry cereal based diet; Genetic factor.

SIGNS TO WATCH FOR
Sudden distension of the dog’s abdomen.
Dog tries to vomit, but unable to bring anything up.
Increased salivation, maybe frothy.
Restlessness and / or  difficulty breathing or breathing rapidly.
Weakness and staggering.
Pale gums, as the dog goes into shock.
